Gummy Smile
Sometimes, a
person shows more gum tissue than they would like. This occurs
when the maxillary jaw bone is disproportionately overdeveloped
or the upper lip is underdeveloped. The smile line shows too
much gum tissue for a pleasing smile. A combination of cosmetic
gum surgery, followed by porcelain veneers, can usually remedy
this situation.
This is a
typical gummy smile.

The outline
of the new smile line is cut into the gum tissue.

The gum is
then lifted off the bone.

The excess
bone is trimmed away, making room for the gum lift.

The gum is
sewn up into the new position leaving the teeth looking too
long.

To eliminate
the look of longer teeth, porcelain veneers or crowns are made.

A new smile
is created more in harmony with the overall face. No more gummy
smile!
This patient
hated to smile. Her teeth were reduced and teeth shortened.

The result
after 10 porcelain veneers gave her the smile she had always
wanted.

High lip gums
were lifted in order to remove excess bone above teeth.

After her
surgery she covered her teeth with 4 porcelain veneers. What a
difference!
